Take a good look at the pictures hanging in your local photo gallery or your favorite photo magazine you will notice that they all have one thing in common: incredible lighting. Light is essentially what makes a photo, and great lighting makes a photo... well, great. There are, however, many ways to provide light for your photographic subjects, but my favorite way is to use available lighting.
Available light is simply the light which already presents itself in your scene without you having to add to it with a flash or strobe.
The most obvious source of available light would be the sun, but it can also includes things like moonlight, candlelight, lamplight and the glowing neon lights you see in a city night scene. Of course, not every picture can be created solely with available light. When the opportunity presents itself, however, be sure to take advantage of the dramatic effect that available lighting can add to your photos on canvas.
